Winches Research (i)

Information on Winches

For our design, we are looking for a manual winching system – therefore the following research is primarily based on Grip Hoists.

Tirfors /Grip hoists

· Uses self gripping jaws to move rope through, rather than a spool.

· Powered by moving a handle back and forth.

· Tirfor = European Name; Grip hoist = American Name

· Allows one person to move several tonnes if needs be.

· Can move objects quickly.

· Easy to set up.

· No ratchet or coil – permitting small adjustments if needed.

· Patented double grip mechanism is so secure that it is rated by the UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc) to be safe enough to hoist humans. E.g. Window cleaner scaffolding.

(Below) ‘Heavy Duty’ Trifurs are already used in rescue situations.
